How does ipl work?
IPL Laser is a heat treatment which selectively targets and destroys the melanin found within the hair follicle. The hair follicle is destroyed using controlled pulses of light at carefully selected wavelengths, suitable to your personal parameters.
These light pulses penetrate the upper layer of the skin (the epidermis) and are successfully absorbed by the melanin with the hair shaft. The light energy is converted into heat which effectively destroys the hair follicle, preventing future hair growth, with no damage to the surrounding tissues.
HOW MANY IPL SESSIONS ARE REQUIRED?
Due to the unique design of our IPL Laser applicators, a large number of hairs can be treated in one pulse of light. For example a treatment of the upper lip, takes approximately 5 minutes.
Every hair has a life cycle; a growing, transitional and resting phase. Only hairs that are in the growing phase can be treated - so, you will need to repeat treatment sessions at intervals, to ensure that all hair follicles are treated during their own growing phase.
Clinical studies have shown that typically between 6-8 treatments are needed, with an interval between treatments of typically 1-2 months. This will be determined following your personal consultation.
CAN ALL HAIRS BE TREATED?
Successful IPL Laser treatment relies on the absorption of light by melanin within the hair, therefore the most efficient and effective treatment is seen with dark-pigmented hair. This means that light blonde, red, grey or white hairs will not respond - for these hairs it may be worth considering alternative hair removal methods such as electrolysis. IPL Laser treatment is suitable for Fitzpatrick Skin Types I - IV.
is ipl hair removal safe?
Yes. The IPL Laser only targets the melanin chromophores in the hair, leaving the surrounding skin and tissue unharmed. You may experience some mild erythema immediately after treatment however, this is normal and will subside shortly after. Your laser specialist will ensure you are aware of your pre and post care, at every appointment.
will i need a patch test?
Absolutely. Before, your first treatment at Lesley Leale-Green, it is a mandatory requirement of treatment, to participate in a full health history, consultation and patch test. At this stage, you will be able to ask your laser specialist any questions you may have and discover more about the treatment process.
